Our Story

Every meaningful place begins long before it has a name.

Hangar's story starts inside a stone warehouse tucked within the historic walled city of Lefkoşa/Nicosia. Built in the early twentieth century, the building spent decades serving different purposes before eventually falling silent. Rather than allowing it to disappear into the city's past, it was carefully restored and reopened in 2022 as a craft brewery—a place where good beer could bring people together.

As people gathered around the brewing tanks and long communal tables, something unexpected began to happen.

The conversations became as important as the beer.

Artists started imagining exhibitions inside the industrial space. Musicians discovered its acoustics. Photographers, filmmakers, writers and performers saw possibilities that extended far beyond hospitality. It became clear that the building wanted to be more than a brewery.

At the same time, one question kept returning:

Where do people from different backgrounds meet through culture?

In a city shaped by history, borders and multiple identities, there are surprisingly few independent spaces where artists, neighbours, students, visitors, Turkish Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and international communities can gather naturally—not as separate audiences, but as participants in the same conversation.

That question became the foundation of Hangar Culture Space.

Today, Hangar is an independent cultural hub where exhibitions, performances, talks, screenings, workshops, concerts and festivals unfold alongside the brewery that first brought people together. Beer remains part of our identity, but culture gives the space its heartbeat.

We believe culture is not something to consume from a distance. It is something to experience together. Every exhibition, conversation, performance and shared meal becomes another layer in the story of this building.

Hangar is still evolving.

Rather than presenting a finished vision, we see ourselves as an open platform—one shaped by artists, collaborators and every person who walks through our doors. Our ambition is simple: to cultivate a place where creativity, dialogue and community can grow together, and where meaningful encounters happen naturally.
